Not on the expressway yet, but we are approaching the I-526 / Market Ctr Drive signal. Wando Spa Terminal is a seaport location which has easy access from I-526.
Signal for I-526/Market Ctr Drive.
Between I-526 and I-526 Spur/Chuck Dawley Blvd at the Ira Road signal.
I-526 Spur/Chuck Dawley Blvd interchange. SCDOT added Chuck Dawley Blvd below the Green I-526 shield (A picture showing the new Big Green Sign is coming soon). Past here begins the expressway.
Bowman Road signal. At this point, US 17 is referred to by some locals as Jonnie Dodds Blvd.
This photo here gives you an idea what kind of an expressway US 17 looks like. The entire stretch is accompanied by frontage roads.
Dragoon Drive signal. This type of practice is done more on US 278 in Bluffton (Near Hilton Head Island).
Flashing lights indicate the weight constrants for the Pearman Bridge. Trucks generally use I-526 for the seaport access or/and bypass Charleston and most of West Ashley.
Houston Northcutt Blvd. Turning right becomes Mathis Ferry Road which is a locally known parallel alternative road to US 17.
Margrath Darby Blvd signal.
Only NB US 17 has access to SC 703(Coleman Blvd) due to the construction arrangement. SC 703 SB enters US 17. This ends the expressway segment of US 17. As construction completes, a new interchange will be built at Wingo Way. This ends the expressway segment of US 17 which now enters the Pearman Bridge ahead. Click the right arrow to continue onto the Pearman Bridge.
The beginning of the Pearman Bridge. Note the lanes are very narrow along this bridge span. To the left is the new suspension bridge being built (Cooper River Bridge) which will take another 1-2 years for the entire project to be completed.
To the left is the NB bridge span which also has one lane going SB as well which takes you directly into the city with some twists and turns once entering the city.
Approaching here is the only emergency pull off spot available on this bridge span.
As we go under the CRB, it will have a direct connection with I-26 while US 17 has to travel a few more miles instead of its current direct route. Interchange is planned at Morrison Drive via East Bay St in the city.
Again, the new bridge going to I-26 and Morrison Drive.
Nearing the end of the Pearman Bridge, going away from the CRB.
East Bay exit which uses neighborhood streets to access it.
Downtown exit which utilizes neighborhood streets to where most people use East Bay Street to downtown using Calhoun, Market and Broad Streets. East Bay also has a seaport.
More options to getting to downtown. Meeting street cuts through the middle of town as well as King Street.
Continuing here is the US 17 boulevard through Charleston and the West Ashley section of the city. It does not have anymore expressway segments through the rest of the state. I-26 begins here and ends in Bristol, Tennessee.
