The northbound and southbound lanes are very far apart at the northern end, curving away from the center to allow for an overpass for the cancelled northern extension.

There is a nice wooded median along the northern part of this rural expressway.

There are fire hydrants along the expressway even though it is in a rural area with no development along the highway. They are probably installed because of Brookhaven National Lab, located just to the east of the highway. (Although it is questionable how much they would help in the case of a real emergency at the laboratory.)

The expressway ends here at I-495, but CR 46 continues south to Fire Island as a multilane conventional highway.
