The beginning of the Southern Pines bypass. Ahead is the at-grade for May Street. This was formerly US 1 until the bypass was built in the 1950s.
At-grade to serve the Highland Hills development.
No interchange for Valleyview road however, there is still a way to get to it ...
By turning left here! No guide signage is provided to guide people to Valleyview road.
Entering the city of Southern Pines.
It must be a coincidence that NC 2 and #2 golf course in Pinehurst go back a long ways sharing the number together.
NC 22 shares two of the three destinations. NC 2 is Midland Road locally along about 95% of its length.
Unlike northbound US 1, there's only one exit here.
Rockingham is now easier to get to because of the new Vass - Cameron bypass.
Excuse the Expressway Site for not providing signage for Pennsylvania Avenue since this is the exit for it.
This area sees moderate pedestrian crossings.
Exit for Morganton Road. In the long run, probably after 2010, NCDOT will upgrade this non-signalized interchange to provide turning lanes for Morganton Road which do not have any at this time. Nightwork along the VMS sign is probably a resurfacing project along the US 1 boulevard through Southern Pines and Aberdeen that has not seen new pavement since at least the 1980s.
Approaching the end of the bypass.
Un-redeeming speed limit for a short time.
Old US 1/Broad Street to the left, frontage road to the right.
Another view from the frontage road.
US 1 continues as a boulevard through Southern Pines and Aberdeen. One more expressway segment will be built to bypass Rockingham. Do not hold your breath, this will not happen until sometime after 2010.
