As the son of
US 64 that runs along an east-west alignment paralleling US 64 to the south, US
264 runs entirely through Central and Eastern North Carolina. Along the way, US
264 serves the eastern Carolina towns of Wilson, Farmville, Greenville and
"Little" Washington. It is not the quickest way to the Outer Banks, since US 64
is the fastest and most direct route.
US 264 is 4-6 lane divided boulevard through Knightdale. Even
after the Knightdale Bypass is completed in spring 2005, US 264 will stay on the
boulevard alignment. From Knightdale to the NC 11 / US 13 interchange in
Greenville, it is a freeway. The newly built Wilson Bypass bypasses the City of
Wilson, where US 264 used to be a highway with horrendous traffic and many
turns. The Wilson bypass (with a 70mph speed limit!) was completed recently on
December 2003, allowing motorists to go from Zebulon to Washington traffic light
free with a constant 65-70 mph speed limit. However, instead of full 12 foot
shoulders, there are 3-5 foot shoulders with a rumble strip. The newly completed
Wilson Bypass, however, has standard 12-foot paved shoulders. After an
expressway segment on the Northeast Greenville Bypass, US 264 is a 4 lane
divided arterial from Greenville to Washington and becomes a boulevard in
Washington. From Washington to NC 32, it is a short expressway segment. From NC
32 to US 64, it is circuitous two-lane highway making a semicircle around Hyde
and Dare Counties. The NCDOT is planning to eventually dualize US 264 east of
Washington. The segment from NC 32 to NC 99 is listed in the 2006-2012
Transportation Improvement Program as an unfunded project planned for
construction after 2012. The Transportation Improvement Program also lists a US
264 bypass of Washington as an unfunded future project.

US 401:
One of the three eastern branches of US 1 in North Carolina, US 401 runs through metropolitan areas of the Raleigh (North Carolinas capital) and Fayetteville (home of the military installments of Ft. Bragg and Pope
Air Force Base). US 401 is currently a 2 lane highway with some existing 4 lane segments in the greater Fayetteville & Raleigh areas. In the future, US 401 is slated to be four lanes from Louisburg all the way to Fayetteville. From the Fayetteville outer loop to northern Raeford, US 401 is a 4-6 lane boulevard through the city of Fayetteville then down to a 4 lane
arterial until the beginning of the Raeford Bypass, which is a 2-lane road. There are no dualization projects slated for US 401 south of Raeford until at least after 2010.
